Balancing a Successful Business and Family Life
Simon Sinek’s influential concept, “Start with Why,” has transformed the way leaders and entrepreneurs approach their goals. The core idea is simple yet profound: understanding the purpose behind your actions can drive motivation and success. For business owners, this principle is essential. Knowing your ‘why’ can be the cornerstone of balancing a thriving business with a fulfilling family life.
Running a business demands resilience, determination, and an unyielding spirit. The journey is riddled with hurdles, setbacks, and challenges that can test even the most stead-fast individuals. Yet, it’s these very obstacles that shape us into successful entrepreneurs. The key is to maintain focus, keep pushing forward, and never lose sight of why you started in the first place.
Reflecting on my early career, I remember the excitement and freedom I felt as a manufacturer’s representative. Life was exhilarating—equipped with an expense account, a company car, and a cell phone, I traversed the states of Michigan and Northern Ohio. Sales were booming, money was abundant, and life seemed perfect. For eight years, this was my reality.
However, an experience at a National Sales Meeting in Florida changed my perspective. While deep-sea fishing with colleagues, I had a candid conversation with a top sales guy—a man I admired. He had been married several times and missed out on his children’s formative years. His daughters’ ballet recitals and piano performances, and his son’s baseball games—all missed due to his relentless pursuit of business success. His story was a wake-up call for me. I realized that while he had built a successful career, he had missed out on precious, irreplaceable family events. This was my ‘Aha’ moment.
This realization came at a pivotal time. I had recently read a book, Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow. The book’s theme is about not chasing the money but rather becoming an expert in something that you’re passionate about. The idea is that people will pay you for your expertise, making you happier and making life feel more rewarding. The message resonated deeply with me. Shortly after that enlightening trip, I accepted a position with LTV Steel, leaving behind the life of sales. This decision marked a significant shift in my career path, leading me to eventually get married and start a family.
The journey of balancing a successful business with family life involves trade-offs. It’s a delicate act of setting priorities and understanding what truly matters. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many of us to pause and reevaluate our lives. It reminded us that life is fleeting, and the moments we cherish with our loved ones are invaluable.
To truly have it all, we must be intentional about our choices. Here are some strategies to achieve a balance between business success and family fulfillment:
Define Your Priorities: Clearly identify what is most important to you. Understanding this will guide your decisions and help you allocate time and resources effectively.
Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. This could mean setting specific work hours and ensuring that family time is uninterrupted.
Delegate and Empower: Trust your team and delegate tasks. Empowering others not only helps lighten your load but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among your employees.
Plan and Schedule: Use tools and strategies to manage your time efficiently. Schedule important family events just as you would business meetings.
Self-Care: Take care of your physical and mental health. A healthy, happy individual is better equipped to handle the demands of both work and family life.
Communicate: Open and honest com-munication with your family about your work commitments and with your colleagues about your family commitments is crucial. This transparency helps manage expect-ations and build understanding.
Reflect and Adjust: Regularly assess your work-life balance and make adjustments as needed. Flexibility is key to finding a balance that works for you and your family. Can you have it all? The answer lies in your ability to prioritize, set boundaries, and remain true to your ‘why.’ The journey of balancing a successful business with a fulfilling family life is not without its challenges. Yet, with intentional effort and a clear focus on what matters, it is possible to thrive both professionally and personally. Remember, the moments spent with family are irreplaceable, and while business success is rewarding, it should not come at the cost of missing out on what’s most important.
While I took a different fork in the road and made an intentional detour, I have no regrets. I have a successful technology firm. Howse Solutions is a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) specializing in low voltage systems, structured cabling, and audio visual solutions. The firm offers comprehensive IT solutions, including hardware and software provisioning, with a focus on providing customized, high-quality services to meet diverse client needs. I started my company because it’s what I love. I loved it ever since I was a wee lad. I believe that you can have it all.
During the journey of growing and scaling my company, I almost lost sight of the goal. I started working some ungodly hours—10 to 15 hours a day. It wasn’t until I spent five days in the hospital suffering from the effects of COVID-19 that reality hit me. My family was petrified. I was petrified. We all did a lot of praying. We prayed while using FaceTime. Thankfully, I was able to walk out of the hospital after a scare. There’s something about having a near-death experience. It does something to your psyche. It changes you. It forces you to understand that tomorrow isn’t promised. Every day is special. Family is special. Why save that 20-year-old bourbon for a special occasion? Every day is a special occasion. So no matter what you choose to do, do it with fervor and zest!
I remember my dad handing me a plaque from Dr. Robert Schuller. It read, “When faced with a mountain, I WILL NOT QUIT! I will keep on striving until I climb over, find a pass through, tunnel underneath, or simply stay and turn the mountain into
